In our member spotlight, Lindsay Andrews, CPSM, sat down for a virtual chat with the Society. Lindsay, who’s a senior manager of business development at Gilbane, has worked in the AEC industry for 26 years and been a member of SMPS for just as long.
Please share some recent professional-related news that you’re proud of. I recently made a job change. I started my career at Gilbane and rejoined the company in 2025. Gilbane is one of the oldest, family-owned construction and real estate development firms in the country and has been experiencing significant growth in advanced manufacturing, data centers, healthcare, and public private partnerships – all markets I’m responsible for nurturing in Central Ohio. The company takes pride in being people-first and providing its staff with the best tools, training, systems and partners. I’m excited to be back at a time of real momentum at the company.
What’s the best professional advice you’ve received? I’ve certainly learned from many people along the way; however, I think all the advice I’ve received has been beautifully summarized in a book I recently read called, The Four Agreements: A Practice Guide to Personal Freedom. The four agreements are: Be impeccable with your word; don’t take anything personally; don’t make assumptions; and always do your best. It’s a short read and has really resonated with me in all aspects of my life. It’s a daily practice.
Why is SMPS membership important to you? SMPS has been the consistent thread throughout my entire AEC marketing and business development career. Joining as a young professional and immediately serving on a committee was a launching pad for developing my network of peers, which ultimately turned into my most meaningful relationships. Those relationships have supported and sustained me in all aspects of my professional career. Our relationships are everything in this industry.
How has the CPSM designation benefited you and your firm? Achieving the CPSM designation was an important milestone. I really wanted to take my knowledge and expertise to the next level. Going through the certification process and the study groups served as an opportunity to see what I didn’t know and gain more exposure in those areas.
Twenty years later, I’m continuing to advance my knowledge in the domains as our industry changes through the excellent resources provided by SMPS like articles in the Marketer, webinars, chapter meetings and regional/national conferences. It’s that dedication to continue to grow and evolve, paired with the Society’s commitment to provide its members with such premier resources that has provided companies I’ve worked for with such value.
What’s on your bucket list? Last fall, I took a week-long trip to Glacier National Park. It was on my bucket list and exceeded my expectations in every way. The beauty was everywhere and it took my breath away at every turn. I couldn’t get enough of the views: mountains, lakes, waterfalls, forests and wildlife. And, perhaps the best part, there was zero cell service.
